molding and Casting

based on my memories with my father

THE FLOWERS BLOOM AS THE MUSIC SINGS

First Piece

I built a mold in the shape of a florence flask. This way I could represent my father's and my passion for science. Each piece in the series uses the mold to make different structures. The first piece uses the complete structure of the mold. This piece focuses on the vibrancy of music and flower. My father  and I share a love for upbeat Indian music and botanical gardens. Overall, the piece symbolizes the cohesiveness of my relationship with my father. Subsequent pieces are made based on stages of my relationship with my father. The first piece uses paint chips and splatters of acrylic paint to express vibrant hues. The little figurine is a symbol of myself within the series.

SHATTERED BEYOND REPAIR

Second Piece

Using the same mold, I casted the vase again. After the piece broke after releasing from the mold, the piece broke in the kiln. Using the shattered pieces, I arranged them in a way that flowed with the circular arc of the bottom of the vase. The shattered pieces represent memories of my father and I disagreeing causing splinters and breaks in our relationship. The gold edges of the pieces highlight the detachment from the other pieces.

DISINTEGRATION

Third Piece

The third cast was made purposely without the top portion. I wanted to make a piece that represented the start of breakage between piece one and piece 2. In this intermediate piece, the little figure represents the overflow of emotions and the subsequent massacre of the mind over it. This is added by the contrast of red and black.

GROWTH

Fourth Piece

The fourth piece returns to the cohesion of my father and I. The form represents a blueberry expressing our shared love of fruits, plants, and orchards. All together the series shows the cycle of my relationship with my father ending with our inevitable reconciliation. After glazing, matte acrylic paint was dabbed on to create a marbled effect.
