Civic Biology
a look at my reflections and case study from Tufts Civic Biology Program
This program, led by Dr. Jonathan Garlick and Dr. Lauren Crowe, raises awareness regarding the power dynamics in biology, as well as encouraging cultural humility, inclusive science communication, and structured dialogue between scientists and the communities they impact. The first half of the program is learning about the biased roots of biological research. Through a series of guest speakers, we learned about the history of mistreatment, lack of bi-directional communication, and lack of broadly engaged team science. In the second half of the program, we apply the skills we learned in the class to a spring placement: Boston COVID Recovery Cohort.

This portfolio shows what skills I've learned in this program and how they can be applied to a current issue in medicine: the lack of broad inclusivity in Parkinson's Disease research.
